A man died after he was shot in the head inside an apparent crack den at a Parkdale roominghouse early yesterday.

Police were called to the King St. W. building at about 5:30 a.m. The victim, whose name won't be released until his family is notified, was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

This slaying also launched a bloody 4 1/2-hour murder spree in Toronto yesterday when three people were killed, raising the city's homicide tally to 50 so far this year.

The three-storey King St. W. roominghouse at Elm Grove Ave. was sealed off for most of yesterday as detectives awaited a warrant to begin their forensic examination of the crime scene.

"I heard a big bang like a car was backfiring," said a nearby resident who didn't want his name used.

"I didn't hear any screaming or yelling.

"I came out here and I didn't see anything, and I went back to bed," he said. "There's always something going on around here."

Homicide Det. Dan Sheppard said the victim was in an alleged crack house within the roominghouse.

He said it was too early in the investigation to know why the victim was killed and if the slaying was planned or the result of an argument.

And cops now know the name of the first homicide victim of the day. When they arrived at 1268 King St. West for unknown trouble at 5:20am, they feared the worst. And they found it - the body of Christopher James White, a homeless man described as being well known in the Parkdale area, was discovered suffering from gunshot wounds.

He succumbed to his injuries in hospital

But who killed the 35-year-old drifter and why remains a mystery. He was last seen alive the night before in the Dufferin and King area.
