Check this out...
My homeboy Andre is currently working on and independent film that chronicles his and others experiences as prep school negroes. In the film he details his experience as a poor black youth going to a rich private white school at a time when that was almost if not completely unheard of. The film is currently in its early stages but I can already tell its going to be dope. I think all of us have our own prep school negro experiences in some way or another but up until speaking to Andre about his film I had not realized that I had experienced my own but in a different way. It was weird growing up the way I did because the time I spent in New York I lived in the hood but when I would go visit my family in the Dominican Republic we were considered upper middle class and life was totally different. Even thought we weren't necessarily rich we had some amenities that the really poor people could not afford. The fact that we traveled was a huge deal. Compared to DR hoods my neighborhood in New York was paradise. So when I would tell kids in the Dominican Republic that I was not rich in New York they would find that hard to believe because compared to them I lived a great life and had all the best toys. My experience is unique in the sense that I feel I got see what its like on both ends of that spectrum even though I'm still not rich(HAHA). I know what it was like to be stared at because you had nice clothes and sneakers but at the same time in New York I knew what it was like to be stressing my mom for a new pair of kicks( that we couldn't afford) because mine were played out and the rich kids had the newest ones.I'm sure all of us go through this sometime in our life not necessarily just with clothing and style but other more important issues maybe like buying a house or a car. I'm glad Andre is making this film I feel no one has touched on this subject the way he will and it definitely should not be ignored. Keep an eye out for it next year and in the meantime check on the progress of the film through his site.
